WOMEN IN HISTORY: Wu Zetian (624—705)
Empress Wu Zetian was the only female emperor in the history of China. She was one of the most effective and controversial monarchs in China’s history. She was the power behind the emperor. Wu took control of the government as empress dowager, placing two of her sons on the throne and removing them almost as quickly. She proclaimed herself and ruled as emperor of China until a year before her death, at the age of 81.
